Administrative Information

The records in this collection are those which have survived from the administration of the Diocese of Carpentaria. In the late 1990's, by request of the Bishop of North Queensland, they were transferred to the Anglican Records and Archives Centre, Brisbane, so that they could be stored in a controlled atmosphere. In April 2006, all the records were transferred to the Townsville office of the Diocese of North Queensland. A microfiche copy of all the records remain in Brisbane for research purposes.

Scope and Content

The See of Carpentaria was founded in 1900, and consisted of such part of Queensland as is bounded by the sea on the north and east, by the Northern Territory on the west, and by a line drawn from lat. South 19 degrees 30 minutes on the western boundary of Queensland due east to par. 144 degrees east and thence north to lat. South 16 degrees 40 minutes and thence east to the sea, together with the whole of the Northern Territory, comprising an area of not less than 820,000 square miles. Northern Territory became a separate diocese in 1968. In 1996 the communities of Cape York became the responsibility of the Diocese of North Queensland and the Diocese of Carpentaria ceased to exist.
