The name of the Provenance was originally Australian Board of Missions. This was changed in 1996 to the Anglican Board of Mission - Australia. It is still known as ABM.

Originated as Council of Education for the Diocese. In the original minute book (1899 - 1929) the following description of the function of the council was given.
"That the Diocesan Council be and is hereby authorised to constitute a Council of Education, to be called the Council of Education for the Diocese of Brisbane, with power to deal with such of the following matters as the Bishop in Council shall by regulation from time to time determine:
(a) The establishment and discontinuance of Primary and Secondary Schools, and University Colleges in any part of the Diocese.
(b) The government, inspection and examination of such Schools or Colleges.
(c) The branches of knowledge to be taught in such Schools or Colleges, and the granting to scholars and students of certificates of efficiency.
(d) The formation of local governing bodies under the control of the Council.
(e) The appointment and removal by the respective governing bodies of teachers, tutors, lecturers, and all necessary officers.
(f) The receiving and disbursing of money for educational purposes.
(g) The acquisition of sites and the erection of buildings for school or collegiate purposes."
