The early period of Grindrod's episcopacy was at the time of the Falklands War and fighting in Lebanon.

Introduced regionalisation of diocese - first regional bishops appointed were Right Rev Ralph E Wicks, Right Rev Adrian Charles and Right Rev Bruce Schultz

 

Attended Sixth Assembly of World Council of Churches in Vancouver and Meeting of Primates of the Anglican Communion in Nairobe

1984

'The ARCIC Experience' - meetings of groups of Roman Catholics and Anglicans for fellowship and discussion culminating in great service of reconciliation in St John's Cathedral on May 29 when Archbishop Rush and Archbishop Grindrod signed declaration to work towards greater unity. This followed publication of The Lima Document which was a statement of agreement on baptism, the Eucharist etc shared by all main stream churches.

Rev George Victor Browning consecrated as Bishop for Northern Region

 

Canons passed accepting General Synod Canons on:
     Admission of Children to Holy Communion
     Marriage of Divorced Persons

Inauguration of Decade of Moving into Mission

 

Canon passed accepting General Synod Canon for ordination of women as deacons but not to be applied until appeal to Appellate Tribunal finalised

 

Continuing debate on Ordination of Women as priests

Visit by Her Majesty the Queen (year of World Expo held in Brisbane)

 

AIDS task force set up

1989

Cathedral completion fund launched

During a large part of Grindrod's episcopacy, the regional bishops carried a heavier-than-usual workload due to Grindrod's attention to Primatial affairs.
