The Church Chronicle, a Diocesan publication, started in October 1886 as The Parish Magazine. Bishop Webber sanctioned the scheme as offering an organ of communication, not only for St. John's church and parish but also, with St. John's as the Pro-Cathedral, 'for Diocesan purposes'. In January 1891 Canon Stone-Wigg, as editor, changed the name to Church Chronicle.
It incorporated a monthly letter from the Archbishop, articles by leading churchmen, information from parishes and about missions. Sometimes articles dealt with the Anglican Church overseas. The Chronicle usually carried photographs not only of people but of places; advertising was a source of finance.
It was published by the Church of England Book Depot until 1916 when the Diocesan Council became responsible for the paper which was printed by John Mills Himself at Charlotte Street, Brisbane. By 1971, with increasing costs and declining circulation, Synod resolved that publication cease with the August issue. The following December the Brisbane Diocesan Newsletter appeared; the name Brisbane was soon deleted and the Diocesan Newsletter appeared, to be reborn as Focus.
The Church Chronicle, held in the Diocesan Records and Archives Centre, is a valuable resource tool; an index is available.
