Edward Wyndham Tufnell

1st Bishop of Brisbane (1859 - 1874)

1860 Arrived in Australia - brought with him seven clergymen (including Thomas Jones and John Sutton) and four laymen to augment the few clergy already in the diocese - one clergyman died on voyage
1868 First Diocesan Synod
  Bishopsbourne completed
1869 Brisbane Female Refuge opened in Turbot Street
1870 Corporation of the Synod of the Diocese of Brisbane constituted under provisions of The Religious and Charitable Institutions Act of 1861
1871 Salaries of all teachers in Anglican school system (parish schools) paid for by State Government
Tufnell purchased areas of land for later church use, often at his own expense, and his episcopate was plagued by shortage of staff and money.
