William Tyrrell

1st Bishop of Newcastle (1847 - 1859)

1847 William Tyrrell was consecrated the 1st Bishop of Newcastle
1848 Tyrrell arrived in Australia in January having brought with him 3 priests, 7 candidates for Holy Orders (2 of whom died shortly after arrival), a school master, a school mistress and some servants
  Bishop Tyrrell left the Brisbane part of the Diocese in the hands of the newly-ordained Benjamin Glennie (one of the candidates he had brought with him from England) - he managed to visit the district himself only every second year
1850 Foundation Stone for St John's new church in William Street, Brisbane was laid
1854 St John's Church was completed and consecrated
1856 Bishop Tyrrell drew to the attention of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in London the fact that his diocese "necessitated a ride on horseback of over 1,000 miles to traverse it" and that the only solution he could see was the formation of a new Diocese
1859 Diocese of Brisbane was formed
